Cannabis sativa L. is a species of flowering plants that contains unique chemical compounds called cannabinoids. There are many varieties of cannabis, and they can be used for many purposes, from medicine to building materials.

Hemp is a legal term defined as any cannabis plant that contains less than 0.3% THC. This can encompass many varieties of cannabis, from CBD dominant to industrial hemp varieties.

CBD dominant cannabis is grown for the cannabinoids produced, and has many of the same physical properties as THC dominant cannabis (legally known as marijuana). There are also other specific cannabinoid dominant varieties, including CBG and CBDV.

Industrial hemp is used for numerous purposes, including animal bedding, bioplastics, building materials and insulation, textiles, paper, and food for both humans and animals. It grows tall with very few branches, similar in look to bamboo.

Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that interact with our body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS).

Our endocannabinoid systems are involved in regulating a wide range of processes inside our bodies including mood, appetite, sleep, and pain.

There are over 100 different cannabinoids found in cannabis, and they all have different roles and effects. The most well known and researched cannabinoids are CBD, THC, CBG, and CBN.

CBD is a naturally occurring compound or phytocannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. It’s gained popularity for its variety of benefits.

CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that will NOT cause intoxicating effects . CBD is the most abundant cannabinoid in hemp plants.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis. This is the intoxicating compound, the one that gets you “high.”

Any cannabis plant that has greater than 0.3% THC is legally defined as “marijuana” and is illegal at the federal level. State regulations vary regarding THC legality and availability.

Hemp was defined and legalized in the 2018 Farm Bill as any cannabis plant with less than 0.3% THC. Products derived from hemp became legal for the first time in almost 100 years after the bill was passed.

In Virginia, hemp is regulated by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS).

Due to differences in metabolism, weight, tolerance, and other factors, everyone responds differently to CBD.

A good starting dosage is 10-20 mg taken consistently for 3-5 days, then increased incrementally if needed.

Those with more severe conditions may start at higher dosages, adjusting the dosage until desired effects are achieved.

Finding the optimal dosage often requires patience as the CBD gets to work in your system.

If you’re new or not consistent with using cannabis always start with a low dose and increase incrementally if needed.

If you have a tolerance to cannabis products start with our recommended serving size and increase incrementally if needed.

Expect to wait between 30-90 minutes to feel the effects. Take note of how you are feeling and make sure that you are comfortable with that feeling. Adjust dosage as needed.

If you anticipate a drug test, it is important to be aware of the different types of CBD products and how they may affect your results.

Full spectrum CBD products contain trace amounts of THC, the psychoactive compound in Cannabis that is NOT safe for drug screenings and can result in a positive test for THC.

Broad spectrum CBD products contain all of the Cannabinoids found in the Cannabis plant except for THC, which is safe for consumption for THC drug screenings.

CBD isolate products only contain CBD and no other Cannabinoids, making it a safe product for potential THC drug tests.

Consult with your company’s HR department, your doctor, etc. if you are concerned about a drug test.

Terpenes (pronounced tur-peens) are natural oils in plants like cannabis that give distinct smells and flavors and can produce medicinal effects.

While terpenes are present in a wide variety of plants for example lavender, basil, and mint, they are especially renowned for their high concentrations in cannabis.

In cannabis, terpenes are also found in the trichomes of the female cannabis plant along with cannabinoids.

Terpenes are developed in the trichomes of the cannabis plant. Trichomes are the hair-like structures that contain both cannabinoids and terpenes.

The effects of cannabis can vary depending on several factors, including the specific varieties consumed, the individual’s tolerance, dosage, and method of consumption.

Some cannabis varieties may contain a combination of cannabinoids and terpenes that produce a balance of relaxing and uplifting effects. For example, certain varieties may have higher levels of myrcene, a terpene known for its sedative properties, which can contribute to feelings of relaxation.

At the same time, other terpenes, such as limonene or pinene, may have uplifting or energizing effects, counteracting feelings of lethargy or sedation.

Finding the right product with the perfect mix of terpenes and cannabinoids for your needs is important. It might take some trial and error to discover the ideal delivery method and dose that works best for you.

With its deep roots, hemp improves soil health by replenishing nutrients and preventing erosion. Unlike many crops, hemp grows well without pesticides or much water. Hemp offers environmental benefits by absorbing carbon rapidly, enhancing soil quality, and requiring few resources to cultivate.
